Business is Personal – Quality and Quantity #1
Been thinking a ton lately about “quality and quantity” or probably better put, “quality vs. quantity” as it is coming into play both personally and at work more and more. I’m fully aware that almost everything I’m about to write has been written before, but I wanted to share my thoughts. Here’s round 1.
Who would you rather be?
Case 1 – You have 1000’s of friends who only know you by your business card or Facebook and Linkedin profile and you only know a hand full of people who you feel REALLY know you well and that would be there for you in a flash OR You have a few 100 friends who have spent some time getting to know you over lunch or even just shooting the shizer on the phone, email, twitter, whatever, and you can recall these people, how you know them and what they were working on last time you spoke AND you also know a crowd of people who you feel REALLY know you well and that would be there for you in a flash.
Case 2 – You’re in sales and have to maintain a certain quota of accounts and are constantly having to hunt for new accounts because your accounts keep leaving you because you sold them something they didn’t need or a service you couldn’t deliver OR You’re in sales and have to maintain a certain quota of accounts but focus on building honest relationships with your book of accounts and are able to hit your quotas by simply asking your current relationships for referrals instead of pounding the pavement or cold calling into companies that you hope and pray will be interested in your services.
Case 3 – You have a dozen employees who you don’t know outside of work, feel should all be grateful to you for providing them with a job and feel are all nowhere near as smart as you are because you’re the CEO or Director and they’re just subservient worker bees/ants/whatever OR You have a dozen employees who you know fairly well, treat with dignity and respect, are smarter than you in their respective field of work because you intentionally hired them for this reason, are 3-5x more productive than a standard employee and make sure to get the job done on time and according to spec, are working on projects you know about because they openly share information with you when asked and are constantly thrilled with the quality and level of work they produce.
